An Open Letter to the Nevada Legislature by an Alzheimer’s caregiver

Cathy Maupin and momImagine”¦

Imagine your loved one forgetting your birthday, forgetting your face, forgetting you.

Imagine your loved one unable to dress herself, comb her hair, brush her teeth, recognize herself in a mirror.

Imagine your loved one in a wheelchair because she can no longer walk.

Imagine your loved one sitting in diapers because she can no longer use a bathroom.

Imagine never again hearing the voice of your loved one because she can no longer talk.

This is Alzheimer’s Disease…

This is the disease that has been my companion for 20 years.

This is the disease that has robbed my mother of everything that made her a unique and beautiful human being.

This is the disease that continues to take my mother from me in little bits and pieces every week, every month, every year.

This is the disease that causes death by inches.

Monday, March 16, 2015 is Alzheimer’s Day at the Nevada State Legislature.  Alzheimer’s advocates from across the state will gather with you to discuss this disease, how it affects those who have this disease, how it affects caregivers and our families, and how it affects our state’s financial and human resources.   We are looking forward to meeting with you to discuss legislation to improve the quality of life for those who have been diagnosed with this disease and for those of us who are caring for a loved one with Alzheimer’s Disease.

Wishing you a life untouched by Alzheimer’s,

Cathy Maupin
Reno, Nevada
